Toast spices, oregano, basil, thyme, salt and pepper, in a vegetable oil in a pot on medium heat until fragrant.
1 tbls vegetable oil, pinch basil, pinch thyme, salt and pepper, 1 tbls oregano
Add in the tomato paste, tomato sauce and water to the pot.
5 oz tomato paste, 8 oz tomato sauce, 16 oz water
Peel and cut onion in half and place in pot with sauce and spice mixture with stick of butter. Mix until butters melted.
1 large yellow onion, 1 stick butter
If you would like to add in the optional beef bouillon and chopped mushroom, do so now.
Pinch beef bouillon, 1 cup mushrooms
Cover and let sit on medium-low for 40 minutes stirring occasionally. Uncover and let simmer for 30 minutes.
Then move to low, cover and let simmer until onion is very soft.
